On the way to the Summit of the future: The challenges of the multilateral system
Beirut, May 20, 2024
As a part of the Global South Study Week on Sustainable Human Development, the Arab NGO Network for Development, Third World Network, Social Watch, Global Policy Forum and the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship of the American University in Beirut (AUB), are organizing a special session entitled “On the way to the Summit of the future: The challenges of the multilateral system”.
The session will address the Summit of the Future, presenting the global discourse and process, discussing critical challenges, and addressing global governance issues by examining the multifaceted crises and obstacles that hinder the efficacy of global governance and multilateralism. It will specifically focus on the economic dimensions, including the international financial architecture, and assess the roles of the global economy, international financial institutions, and the United Nations. Additionally, it will delve into the impact of global crises on security, economic prosperity, and social cohesion.
By focusing on the regional context and aligning with the future Summit, ANND and its partners will endeavor through a series of activities to establish a platform for civil society organizations in the Arab region. The goal is to engage with this international process, participate in discussions on key issues and critical challenges, and amplify the voice of civil society on the main topics to be addressed during the Summit. This includes initiating a regional and national dialogue on challenges affecting the future, particularly the actual implementation of the 2030 Agenda, the financial structure, the role of financial institutions and the United Nations, peace and security, climate justice, and intergenerational justice. The network emerges from the regional context, emphasizing the importance of adopting a transformative and comprehensive approach that prioritizes identifying root causes and engaging in "multilateral solutions for a better tomorrow."
